Today in History & Dark Mode!

With the release of Chunks v2025.12.8, I'm introducing two features that have been at the top
of my list: Today in History and dark mode.

Today in History

The Today in History feature highlights notable events that happened on today's date throughout history, along with biographies of people who were born or died on this day.

It's a simple concept, but it's become one of my favourite parts of the app. Every morning you get a fresh set of historical moments to explore — some you'll recognise, and some that will genuinely surprise you. It's the kind of feature that turns a quick app open into a "wait, Ihad no idea that happened today" moment.

For example, you might learn that on a random Tuesday in March, the Eiffel Tower officially opened, a groundbreaking scientific paper was published, and a famous composer was born — all on the same date, decades apart. Those kinds of connections make history feel more alive than a textbook ever could.

The feature pulls from a curated database of events that's continuously expanding. Each entry links to a full story or character card if you want to dig deeper, so it acts as a natural entry point into the wider Chunks library.

You can reach Today in History from either the Home screen or the Explore screen.

Dark mode

This one has been the most requested feature since launch. Dark mode follows your device's system setting automatically — if your phone is in dark mode, Chunks will be too.

I paid close attention to the reading experience here. The goal wasn't just to invert the colours, but to make sure the text contrast, image presentation, and overall feel work well in low-light environments. Whether you're reading before bed or just prefer a darker interface, it should feel comfortable and easy on the eyes.

Both features are live now in the App Store and Play Store. If you have feedback on either feature, or ideas for what you'd like to see next, email me at hello@chunks.app or send feedback directly in the app.

Thanks,
Andy.

Cognitive Load Theory Explained: Why Less is More in Learning

Cognitive load theory is a framework for understanding how the human brain processes and stores new information during learning. Developed by educational psychologist John Sweller in 1988, it proposes that our working memory has strict capacity limits, and that instructional design should be structured to work within those limits rather than against them. When learning materials exceed working memory capacity, comprehension breaks down -- not because the learner lacks ability, but because the de
