Frequently Asked Questions

Who were the Templar Knights and when were they founded?

The Templar Knights, officially known as the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, were a Catholic military order founded around 1119 CE. They were established in Jerusalem during the Crusades to protect Christian pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. The order began with just nine founding members led by Hugh de Payens.

What happened to the Templar Knights and why did they disappear?

The Templar Knights were disbanded in 1312 after King Philip IV of France orchestrated their downfall. On Friday, October 13, 1307, Philip ordered the mass arrest of Templars across France on charges of heresy and other crimes. The last Grand Master, Jacques de Molay, was burned at the stake in 1314, effectively ending the order's existence.

How did the Templars become so wealthy and powerful during the Middle Ages?

The Templars became immensely wealthy through donations of land and money from European nobility who supported the Crusades. They developed an early banking system, allowing pilgrims to deposit money in Europe and withdraw it in the Holy Land. Their military prowess and papal protection also granted them significant political influence and exemptions from taxes.
